Illinois is the home state of former president Barack Obama, under whom Joe Biden served as Vice President. Overall 6,033,744 ballots were cast in the 2020 election, putting total state turnout at about 67%. The state swung heavily for Joe Biden, who won its 20 electoral votes with 57.6% of the popular vote. Illinois has consistently voted for Democrat presidential candidates since 1992.
Illinois has a bicameral legislature with 59 senators and 118 representatives. Democrats have held the majority in both chambers since 2003. Governor J.B. Pritzker (D) is eligible for re-election in 2022.
